Professor Symeon Papavassiliou received the Diploma in Electrical Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece, in 1990 and the M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, New York in 1992 and 1995 respectively.

Currently he is with the Faculty of Electrical and Computer Engineering Department, National Technical University of Athens, Greece. In August 1999 he joined the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT), USA, where he was an Associate Professor until 2004. From 1995 to August 1999 Dr. Papavassiliou worked both as a Technical Staff Member and as a Senior Technical Staff Member in private sector in New Jersey. From June 1996 till August 1999 he was also an Adjunct Professor at the Electrical Engineering Department of Polytechnic University, Brooklyn, NY. Dr. Papavassiliou was the Director of the Broadband, Mobile and Wireless Networking Laboratory (2000-2004), and the Coordinator of the Computer Networking Thrust Area at NJIT (2000-2003).

Dr. Papavassiliou was awarded the Best Paper Award in INFOCOM'94, the AT&T Division Recognition and Achievement Award in 1997, and the National Science Foundation (NSF) Career Award in 2003. He has also been a founding member and Associate Director of the New Jersey Center for Wireless Networking and Internet Security (New Jersey, USA), and a member of the New Jersey Center for Multimedia Research. His research has been recognized by many industry and government organizations. He also has an established record of publications in his field of expertise, with more than one hundred technical journal and conference published papers.

His main research interests lie in the areas of computer and communication networks, sensor and wireless ad hoc networks, mobile and distributed computing, network design and management, TCP/IP and internetworking, computer network modeling and performance evaluation and optimization of stochastic systems.
